Why I Never Finished My Dissertation

Poetry is a language I speak fluently. Even though I love to express myself in this medium, I rarely read other’s poems. I’m glad I chose to. Why I Never Finished My Dissertation, is a slim volume of poetry that grabs you by the collar to make sure you are fully immersing yourself in the author’s words. Her poems are vivid, joyful, sad, and if nothing else, deep. Just from this collection I can gather that Laura has had a rough life, but that through it all she had crafted a sweet life for herself.

If you love poetry, love memoirs in free verse then you will want a copy of this book of poetry. After finishing this book I want to go hunt down Laura’s other books of poetry. She is talented and inspiring.

I received my complimentary copy of Why I Never Finished My Dissertation by Laura Foley from TLC Book Tours and the author. The views are mine and my own choice. This book was intriguing.

The Grief We’re Given

Poetry is personal. It’s sharing your soul through words to describe life: every crumb, sparkle and devastation. It can rhyme, not rhyme, there are many varieties of poetry. I enjoy writing poetry myself. I find it soothing and calming for me. Plus, it gives me a history of what I have been going through.

The Grief We’re Given is a tour de force on grief. The author displays it in all its mishmash of beauty, horror, and hope. Grief is not a one size fits all emotion. Mr. Bortz handles this subject through his poetry with images that capture you. I felt like I was watching a movie as I read each poem. His descriptions are vivid, colorful and memorable. If you like to read poetry you might enjoy this poetry collection.

I received my complimentary digital copy of The Grief We’re Given by William Bortz from Central Avenue Publishing, care of NetGalley. The views are mine and of my own choice. Whoever thought that the topic of death and grief could be displayed so elegantly, with tender care found a gem when they discovered Mr. Bortz and his captivating poetry.

Grabbing Pussy

When I saw the title it piqued my interest. I love poetry and thought for sure the topic would mean the poetry would be powerful. Alas this was not the book for me. I understand wanting to be edgy, in your face, bold, blunt and a sprinkle of funny, but I had to force myself to finish this book. I don’t like wanting to DNF a book.

This book of poetry and commentary is about the topics of Trump, Hilary, politics and feminism. I love poetry, but I think I need to stick with more classical poetry that doesn’t sound worse than a truck driver. I know the author is just trying to make a loud statement; it’s just not my preferred style of poetry.

I received this digital ARC from Edelweiss for free in exchange for my honest feedback. If you enjoy potty humor, swearing and crass poetry then you may love Grabbing Pussy by Karen Finley.

Take Me With You

Take Me With You is a collection of LGBTQIA poems. There are lovely illustrations throughout this book of poetry. The poems deal with topics that range from relationships, coming out, anxiety, etc. I liked this book of poems, except it was a tad bit hard to follow with how the book ended up formatted. If you enjoy poetry you may like this book. I received this ARC for free from NetGalley in exchange for my review.
