I have read a few trans memoirs. They are always fascinating, intense, inspirational and thought provoking. Self-Made Woman is the memoir of Dennis who discovers his desire to be a woman the day he falls into the lake and almost drowns at his grandparent’s lake cabin. Due to his clothes being wet from falling in the water he is given a dress to wear while his clothes dry. This experience opens the door to him realizing just how wearing a dress makes him feel. At a young age he realizes he doesn’t just merely love being around woman and girls, but wishes he could be one rather than a boy. This memoir is Dennis’ story of becoming Denise.
Her journey is not for the faint of heart. Some of the things she goes through in discovering herself are outside my comfort zone, so parts where a tad hard to stomach. If you are into kinky things you might like this autobiography. I am more of a plain Jane, so this memoir wasn’t my cup of transformational tea.
I received my free copy of Self-Made Woman by Denise Chanterelle Dubois from TLC Book Tours in exchange for my honest feedback. I do like reading memoirs, so I’m glad I got the opportunity to read Denise’s story. I’m just sad it didn’t connect with me like I thought it would.

I thought this well written memoir shared Denise’s incredible journey through her transformation and on top of it to have written it as an elder means a lot to those transitioning and/or wanting to better understands others journeys. Denise has had an onslaught of interest, book readings that are well attended and follow up from her book which says a whole lot about the quality of the writing and how she shares it. Thank you Denise for sharing your story!
